ABOUT

CoastClim explores the potential of coastal ecosystems as natural solutions to mitigate climate change by simultaneously quantifying biodiversity and climate feedbacks.

The results are crucial to improve the management of our coasts and maximize their potential positive role in climate and environmental policies.

OUR VISION

BACKGROUND

The global climate and biodiversity crises are inextricably linked. Coastal ecosystems are highly productive and dynamic in terms of ocean-atmospheric carbon fluxes and potentially act as powerhouses of mitigation to combat climate change.

At present, we lack a comprehensive understanding of how coastal biodiversity contributes to carbon sequestration and atmospheric feedbacks. To resolve this globally important knowledge gap, we need new multidisciplinary approaches to quantify coastal carbon cycling, and the contribution of healthy or degraded coastal habitats in mediating climate change.

CoastClim was founded to bring together a unique combination of expertise in marine ecology, biogeochemistry, marine physics and atmospheric research.

The mission of CoastClim is to quantify coastal biodiversity descriptors and their feedbacks between the origin and type of habitat-specific greenhouse gas fluxes and aerosol precursors in the coastal zone. Furthermore, the aim is to create a decision-support system to improve the use and management of coastal ecosystems with the capacity to absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere.
